TotalEnergies and AEW Partner to Power Saudi Arabia’s Renewable Vision with 300MW Rabigh 2 Solar Project
In a groundbreaking step towards renewable energy leadership, TotalEnergies and Aljomaih Energy and Water Company (AEW) have signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) for the 300MW Rabigh 2 Solar Power Project. This ambitious initiative is set to play a key role in Saudi Arabia’s journey toward a cleaner, greener energy future.
Advancing Vision 2030 with Renewables
Rabigh 2 is part of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) under Round 5, which aims to create an optimal energy mix by balancing gas and renewable energy at approximately 50% each by 2030. The project aligns with Saudi Arabia’s bold Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce carbon emissions.
The solar plant, scheduled to connect to the grid in 2026, will be developed, built, owned, and operated by the TotalEnergies-AEW consortium, showcasing their shared expertise and commitment to renewable innovation.
Leadership Speaks
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm about the project:
“Together with our partner Aljomaih Energy and Water Company, we are thrilled to contribute to Saudi Arabia’s target of increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix. This new project is another example of our multi-energy strategy to accompany oil & gas producing countries in their energy transition.”
Pouyanné further highlighted TotalEnergies’ ongoing contributions to Saudi Arabia, including their involvement in refining and petrochemical projects (Satorp and Amiral) and the construction of the 119MW Wadi Al Dawasir Solar Power Plant, set to start operations in early 2025.
Similarly, Ibrahim Al Jomaih, Chairman of AEW, emphasized the significance of this partnership:
“We are proud to lead the development of the 300MW Rabigh 2 solar project together with TotalEnergies, highlighting our shared commitment towards supporting Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative and Vision 2030. Leveraging our local market expertise and global reach, we aim to play a pivotal role in advancing the energy transition with excellence and partnership.”
Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future
The Rabigh 2 project represents more than just another solar installation; it symbolizes Saudi Arabia’s growing focus on sustainability. By integrating cutting-edge solar technology and global expertise, this initiative will:
- Reduce carbon emissions.
- Expand the Kingdom’s renewable energy infrastructure.
- Demonstrate the potential of private-public partnerships in achieving national energy goals.
TotalEnergies’ Expanding Renewable Portfolio
The Rabigh 2 project is yet another milestone in TotalEnergies’ multi-energy strategy, which focuses on delivering more energy with fewer emissions. With projects like Wadi Al Dawasir and Rabigh 2, TotalEnergies is actively contributing to the global energy transition while strengthening its footprint in Saudi Arabia. #Rabigh2 #SolarPower #RenewableEnergy #Vision2030 #SaudiGreenInitiative #TotalEnergies #SustainableFuture
