NKT Secures €1 Billion HVDC Contracts to Advance Germany’s Energy Transition
NKT has been chosen by TenneT, the Dutch-German transmission system operator, to deliver state-of-the-art high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power cable systems for two pivotal projects in Germany. These contracts, worth approximately €1 billion, underline NKT’s role as a leader in the HVDC power cable market and a vital partner in Europe’s energy transformation.
Powering the Future: LanWin7 and NordOstLink Projects
Under the agreement, NKT will design, produce, and install advanced 525kV onshore and offshore cable systems for the LanWin7 scheme and the NordOstLink project.
- LanWin7: This ambitious offshore grid connection system will link wind power generated in the North Sea to a multi-terminal hub in Pöschendorf, Schleswig-Holstein. From there, the renewable energy will seamlessly flow into Germany’s mainland network, significantly enhancing the country’s energy capacity.
- NordOstLink: This project involves the laying of additional cables to bolster grid capacity and flexibility, ensuring a more resilient and efficient energy distribution system.
Both systems are scheduled for commissioning in 2033-34, marking a major milestone in Germany’s energy infrastructure evolution.
Strengthening a Proven Partnership
The contracts were awarded under an existing multi-year framework agreement between NKT and TenneT. NKT CEO Claes Westerlind expressed excitement about this new chapter in their collaboration: “We are thrilled to once again be selected as a key partner for TenneT’s ambitious 2GW Program. This confirms our strong partnership and NKT’s leading position in the high-voltage DC power cable market. We look forward to applying our advanced power cable technology to these two additional projects in Germany, which will enable the energy transition in Europe by facilitating the efficient transport of wind power from the North Sea to the onshore grid.”
A Commitment to Europe’s Energy Transition
These projects are not just about infrastructure; they represent a cornerstone of Europe’s energy transition strategy. By efficiently transporting renewable wind energy from the North Sea to the mainland grid, the LanWin7 and NordOstLink projects are vital to reducing carbon emissions and securing a sustainable energy future.#NKT #TenneT #HVDC #EnergyTransition #RenewableEnergy #NorthSeaWind #LanWin7 #NordOstLink #SustainableEnergy #GreenInfrastructure #WindPower #GridInnovation #EuropeEnergyLeadership
