New Jersey Celebrates 5GW Solar Milestone, Doubling Capacity Since 2017
New Jersey has achieved a significant renewable energy milestone, reaching 5GW of installed solar capacity—more than double the state’s solar energy output since 2017. This accomplishment reflects the state’s dedication to clean energy and its commitment to combating climate change.
Governor Phil Murphy’s Vision for Clean Energy
Governor Phil Murphy highlighted the importance of this milestone, stating:
“With this milestone achievement in solar energy, we are building a strong foundation for renewable energy while combating the imminent threat of climate change and propelling our state forward on 100% clean electricity.
By expanding solar programs and resources for homes and businesses, we are taking a whole-of-government approach to making solar energy more affordable and accessible than ever before.”
Under his leadership, New Jersey has allocated $156 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to fund solar energy projects delivering 175MW of clean energy to low-income households. These initiatives ensure that renewable energy benefits are equitably distributed across communities.
Innovative Programs Driving Solar Expansion
To further enhance solar development, the state launched a “Landfill to Solar” resource page, designed to assist local governments and solar developers in repurposing landfills for solar energy projects. This initiative maximizes land use efficiency while supporting clean energy growth.
Leadership in Clean Energy
Eric Miller, Executive Director of New Jersey’s Office of Climate Action and the Green Economy, expressed pride in the state’s progress:
“New Jersey is leading the way on solar, meeting our clean energy and climate commitments while creating a thriving in-state clean energy economy.”
Currently, in-state solar power generates over 8% of New Jersey’s electricity. According to Lyle Rawlings, President of the Mid-Atlantic Solar and Storage Industries Association, solar energy’s growth is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving the governor’s ambitious target of 100% clean energy by 2035.
